Abu Dhabi court orders 'biological' dad to recognise baby born after artificial insemination

An Abu Dhabi court ordered an Arab man to recognise his newborn baby after he refused to do so on the grounds his wife had artificial insemination after they were divorced, a newspaper reported on Saturday.

Before their divorce, the man and his wife decided to have artificial insemination after failing to have babies despite years of marriage.

Doctors told the wife it would be impossible for her to get pregnant, prompting the husband to divorce his wife, following a rift of several months.

A few months later, the woman, eager to return to her ex-husband, went to the same medical centre for a fresh artificial insemination.

Doctors, using frozen sperm and eggs given by the couple during their first visit, told the wife the operation was successful this time and she was pregnant.

When she went to her ex-husband and told him the good news, he was shocked and told her that the baby could not be his and that he had a new wife.

The woman then decided to go to court to force the man to recognise his son, submitting a medical report showing the baby was a result of his sperm.

“The man filed a suit against the hospital which carried out the second artificial insemination without his consent, but after several sessions, the court decided to side with the baby.

“It decided to give the baby his father’s name as a biological father, ordered him to be financially responsible for the baby and acquitted the hospital from all charges,” ‘Al Bayan’ newspaper said.
