A smartphone's battery sparked a fire on a 13-hour Qantas flight from Sydney to Los Angeles earlier this week.

Six-hours into the flight, a passenger's mobile phone fell off and slipped into the gap in between the seats and got crushed when the seat's reclining mechanism was in motion, reports News.com.au.

The battery inside the smartphone got crushed and immediately burst into flames.

The crew got into action and the blaze was put oput using a fire extinguisher.

An investigation is currently on.

Australian airlines have already banned the carriage of lithium-ion batteries in its cargo holds after it was found that such batteries pose a risk of fire.
