Dubai Police has launched a campaign to combat begging during the month of Ramadan.

Twenty-one senior officers from Dubai Police will be a part of the campaign, which has been launched in collaboration with Residency and Foreigners Affairs, Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department and Dubai Municipality. These ‘Unknown Soldiers’ will be deployed across the emirate to help police patrols nab people who beg, said Colonel Mohammed Rashid Al Muhairi, Director, Tourist Police Department, at a press conference.

According to Dubai Police statistics, 312 beggars (248 males and 64 females) were nabbed during the Ramadan month last year, while a total of 1,549 beggars (1302 males and 247 females) were held last year.

Dubai Police called on public to report about beggars on numbers # 0502106969, or # 800234.

Dubai Police, however, stressed that the campaign does not intend to prevent giving charity.

According to the Penal Code of the UAE, begging is a punishable offence.
