"I am serving a life-term because I killed a family here in Dubai about ten years ago,” with these words the 43-year-old Indian inmate started his interview.

He converted to Islam in prison with full belief after experiencing the good treatment he receives from policemen at the prison and attending many lessons and lectures about the religion.

"I am serving a life-term for murder, and I know that for such a crime you are not pardoned nor do you get a reduced imprisonment period for memorising the Holy Quran. I didn't convert for that purpose, but because I fully believe in the religion."

He is now licensed from the Department of Islamic Affairs for teaching new inmates Quran.

"I thank Allah for everything, and I deeply regret the crime I committed. I was living with huge guilt and it had made my life difficult. Now, I am living in peace with myself. I realised that instead of living with the feeling of guilt it is better if I try to ask for forgiveness and do good things."

He is now working at the central jail workshop and produces many wooden products.

"I find working at the workshop very useful as it clears our minds and also helps pass time. We earn our living by selling products we make as we don't have relatives here."
