28 AUS students win research awards

Published

Twenty-eight students were honoured for their research projects at a special ceremony held at American University of Sharjah (AUS) on Wednesday.

The prestigious Student Research Awards Competition is an annual activity organised by the AUS Office of Research to support and promote research, scholarships and creative activity among students.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Thomas Hochstettler, AUS Provost, congratulated the winning students and their advisors for their work, time and effort. "AUS has been educating people from its earliest days, turning people into leaders and discoverers. Tonight we celebrate the achievements of these young men and women who have reached extraordinary feats of individuality and achievement," he said.

Speaking about the university’s vision, Dr. Hochstettler also addressed the importance of both institutional teaching and research. "There are those who believe that as research is becoming a new focus, we miss out on teaching. However, I think that tonight we see the importance of both," he added.

Winners of the BP Excellence Awards each received a Sony laptop and a certificate while the winners of the Sharjah Islamic Bank Awards received cash prizes totaling Dhs30,000.

The AUS Student Research Awards recognized the achievements of student researchers from the university’s College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), College of Engineering (CEN), College of Art, Architecture and Design (CAAD), and the School of Business and Management (SBM). Held annually, the event is one of the most prestigious events at the university and was sponsored by British Petroleum (BP) and Sharjah Islamic Bank (SIB). All submitted proposals go through a two-tier evaluation process. The first tier is a review process on the academic unit level. Proposals nominated by different academic units go through the second tier, in which a university review panel of faculty members from the different schools and colleges review the nominated proposals and select the winners.
