On the request of Dubai Prosecution, the Traffic Court suspended a total of 391 driving licences for involvement in fatal accidents and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs during the first quarter of this year.

Salah bu Farousha Al Falasi, Chief Traffic Prosecutor,  said: “The Traffic Court ordered the suspension of a total 391 licences for different periods. The penalties against drivers from different nationalities also included imprisonment and fines,” he said.

Al Falasi said the court ordered the suspension of 24 licences for causing others’ death. Eight licences were suspended for a year and the rest for three and six months.

As many as 311 drivers were caught driving under the influence of alcohol and their licences were suspended for three months.  Eight drivers were convicted for driving under the influence of drugs and their licences were suspended for period ranging from three months to a year.

48 motorists were found guilty of causing accidents and had their licences suspended for different periods.

Al Falasi said 321 licences were suspended during the first quarter of 2012. Twenty licences were suspended for causing death to others, 284 for driving under the influence of alcohol, two for driving under the influence of drugs and 15 for involvement in traffic accidents.

Al Falasi said Dubai Attorney General Issam Isa Al Humaidan had directed that the Prosecution should request the court to implement the suspension of driving licences of motorists involved in fatal or major accidents.

He noted that the amendment of the Federal Traffic Law allows the Court to order the suspension of driving licences of motorists involved in driving offences.

Al Falasi said motorist whose licences have been suspended cannot drive during the suspension period or he will face legal action.

“Should any convicted motorist be caught driving, the penalty would be not more than three months imprisonment and not less than Dh5,000 fine. I call upon all motorists to abide by the traffic to avoid legal action and penalties. The Prosecution will not be lenient in the implementation of the penalties,” he added.
