An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter Scale was recorded in the Arabian Sea at 6.43am on Saturday.

The incident was confirmed by the country’s National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS), with the authority confirming no impact on the UAE.

The earthquake struck along the Owen Fracture Zone, stated the NCMS, which is a fault line that runs along the eastern boundary of the Arabian Plate.

Speaking with Emirates 24|7, Khamis Al Shamsi, Head of Seismology at NCMS, stated: “This was not a big earthquake, with no impact on UAE following the 4.9-magnitude tremblor.”

Al Shamsi continued: “The epicentre of the quake was along the Owen Fracture Zone, which cuts across the Arabian Sea and near the coastline of Yemen. However, this earthquake was 20-30kms deep and hundreds of kilometres away from Yemen’s coastline.

"There is also no warning issued for a Tsunami or high waves, following the earthquake."

The NCMS official added the area was not “an active zone” and “bears no relation to the 2.6-magnitude earthquake that was recorded north of Fujairah earlier in the week.”
