7 sailors burnt to death as dhow catches fire

Seven sailors including the captain of a wooden dhow sailing from Sharjah were burnt to death near Salalah in Oman.


The incident occurred on Friday following a massive explosion near the one of the five Khuriya Muriya Islands, 40km off the southeastern coast of Oman.


According to reports the Coast Guards at Salalah rushed to the spot and managed to rescue nine others who were on the ship.


Coast guard officials at Salalah confirmed the incident Emirates 247 and said the rescued sailors have been drought to the shore but failed to provide additional details.


The dhow was sailing towards Somalia when the incident occurred. All those dead are from Pakistan and according to Times of Oman the captain of the ship has been identified as Fateh Mohammed.
