Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, today welcomed the inauguration of the United Nation's Liaison Office for the Gulf Cooperation Council for Arab States (GCC) in Abu Dhabi.

In a statement issued after opening of the office by Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union, GWU, Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation, FDF, and President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, Sheikh Abdullah said the UAE attaches great importance to deepening relations with the UN.

"We are pleased to host the UN Women's Liaison office in Abu Dhabi, which is considered a true opportunity to enhance communication among the GCC countries and a recognition of the UAE's role in promoting gender equality as an integral part of the UN sustainable development goals," he said.

He continued: "This bodes well for the UAE's special attention to women welfare. Women empowerment comes at the heart of the economic and social development in our country and women's contributions to the growth and progress are indispensable. This makes them an integral part of our policies, including the foreign policy."

He concluded by saying: "We strongly believe that our investments in international peace, development and security would be more balanced and sustainable when we engage everyone, regardless of their gender, in the development process."
