Abu Dhabi blast: 2 hurt, 45 cars smashed, 21 buildings damaged

Abu Dhabi Police and Civil Defence teams brought under control the fire incident, which erupted in a building in Mussafah district in Abu Dhabi, at dawn on Sunday, when the gas central pipeline burst in an eight-storey building.

Two people were injured in the incident which left the windows of 21 neighbouring buildings and 45 vehicles smashed.

Colonel Sheikh Mohammed bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, Director of the Department of Outpost Police, who led the rescue teams, said the incident, which was followed up by Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, occurred at 03:30am on Sunday. He added that the report received by the operations room said thunderous blast was heard when fire erupted in a building at Mussafah Commercial district, East 10.

Based on the report, he continued, the rescue teams rushed to the scene of incident and extinguished the fire, adding that a man and woman sustained light injuries and were rushed to Al Mafraq Hospital.

Colonel Mohammed Al Nuaimi, Acting Director General of the Civil Defence in Abu Dhabi, said according to the initial report the incident was triggered by the leakage of gas from the central gas pipeline in the building, leading to the blast. He added that most of the damages of neighbouring buildings and vehicles were smash of windows.
