Abu Baker Al Fahim, Director of Training and Capacity Building Department gave an opening speech in which he welcomed the participants and stressed the importance of increasing knowledge and awareness levels among Abu Dhabi Customs officials.

Al Fahim stressed the importance of distinguishing between genuine and counterfeit goods and products and praised the efforts of the General Directorate of Abu Dhabi Customs to combat commercial fraud, battle counterfeiting and maintain intellectual property rights in the UAE.

Al Fahim also highlighted the UAE’s and Abu Dhabi Customs’ commitment to the implementation and execution of all standard agreements for protecting intellectual property rights and combating cases of infringement and violations of trademark counterfeiting, which in turn falls with efforts to protect intellectual property rights and halt the damage that is inflicted on national interests, industrial and commercial investments and trade flows.

The workshop witnessed the participation of a large number of Abu Dhabi Customs’ officers from different departments, divisions and centres along with the attendance of a number of employees from the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED).

Methods and procedures adopted for combating counterfeiting and forgery were also covered in the workshop through a presentation of images showcasing original products from the international automotive industry versus replicas.

The participants were also presented with photos of several seizures of counterfeit goods, the smuggling of which was foiled by different Customs Administrations in the UAE, as well as a number of original and counterfeit products with an explanation on how to distinguish between them.

The session also presented an extensive explanation of the concept of intellectual property, which mainly addressed the importance of knowing the rules and procedures for protecting intellectual property along with an explanation on the detection methods used to identify counterfeit spare parts and the role of the community and those responsible in maintaining the real product.

Towards the end of the session, on behalf of the General-Directorate of Customs, Al Fahim thanked all those who contributed for their efforts in making the training workshop a success, including Abu Dhabi Customs staff, Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED) staff and lecturers from different firms, adding that he hoped that the session will help in achieving the nation’s ultimate goals.
