Mustafa is not excited about scoring 90 per cent in the CBSE 10th standard school results announced recently. But his family and the entire community are happy about how bravely this 100 per cent blind boy has fought his disability.

The 15-year-old, who has been blind since birth, will return to his home state - the South Indian state of Kerala – for higher studies.

Speaking to Emirates24|7 about how he studied, Mustafa said that his began by registering sounds. His mother would read out the lessons several times.

“I wanted to take science, but since I am blind I cannot do the laboratory experiments and so have opted for humanities. My immediate priority is to pass the Plus-Two examinations with good grades,” he said.

Mustafa, however, has a complaint. “Blindness did not prevent me from studying well, but many Indian school principals were reluctant to take me in as a regular student here,” he said.

Mustafa is the eldest son of Hilal Hassan Koya and Sini Fathima Hilal, from Alappuzha, Kerala. Koya did everything possible he could to treat his son. He even quit his Dubai job and returned to India for a while and tried setting up a business. But when he went bankrupt, he returned to Dubai along with his wife and three kids and started fresh with Al Fardan Group.

That’s when he alleges that he found it difficult to get a school admission for Mustafa. No regular school would admit Mustafa and there were no Indian schools following brail syllabus.

At last Emirates National School admitted him from 5th Grade. Through teachers and parents’ guidance Mustafa started learning using audio books. His mother has been a strong support by helping him take notes and reading out lessons regularly.

Mustafa’s hobbies include writing poetry, playing chess, and playing key board.

“This is my sweet revenge to all those principals and teachers who refused me admission,” Mustafa said.
