Brand Dubai, a subsidiary of the Government of Dubai Media Office, has unveiled a public art installation titled ‘Sand In the Waves’ on The Beach at Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR).

Created by acclaimed New Zealand artist Gary Yong, ‘Sand in the Waves’ is a unique piece of public art that uses sand bags to create the shape of a wave.

Unveiled on the occasion of UAE Innovation Week, the art installation seeks to create an innovative playground on the beach that enhances the atmosphere of happiness and playfulness for children and families.

Ayesha bint Kalli, Innovation Executive at Brand Dubai, said: “Brand Dubai is keen to work with accomplished artists like Yong to develop public installations that can create a creative ambience in key public areas of Dubai. Our larger objective is to enhance the artistic character of the city in such a way that brings out its identity as a global city of happy, creative and empowered people and a place that deftly blends modernity with its rich cultural heritage.”

‘Sand in the Waves’ is a tribute to the relationship between the sand and the ocean. Sand is a symbol of time and infinite possibility, impossible to grasp in any permanent way; yet it carries past memories and creates new experiences.

Gary Yong, who also goes by the moniker of Enforce One, is Founder and Director of Cut Collective, an art collective that is well-known for its innovative and unconventional public and art. Some of Yong’s installations have been displayed in prominent locations in Dubai including Box Park.

The art installation ‘Sand in the Waves’ can be viewed by the public during UAE Innovation Week from November 22 to 28.
