An Indian contractor has been sentenced to five years and three months in jail for issuing 22 dud cheques.

The cases were filed against by companies he issued the cheques to.

The total value of the cheques was more than Dh5.5m, of which Dh3.273m was the value of one cheque issued to National Bank of Dubai by the 43-year-old man identified as MLA.

In his confession before the Dubai Courts of Misdemeanour, he told the jury presided by Judge Zakariya Abdul Aziz that the cheques were issued before the economic crises.

He was since unable to collect Dh66 million due to him from various parties.

The court also heard another dud cheque case in which MLA was accused jointly with ESA, another Indian national. This case will be heard next month.
