Couple accused of killing maid

An Arab man and his wife are on trial in Abu Dhabi on charges of murdering their housemaid by pouring chemical substances on her.

The prosecutor accused the couple of locking up their maid for nearly a month at their house in the capital and torturing her before pouring chemicals on her with the intention to kill her. They first denied the charges but confessed to the crime later.\

Their defence lawyer argued that the couple could have mental problems, prompting the judge to send them for psychological examination.

Newspapers said the prosecutor asked court to enforce Islamic law against the couple—a crime that carries the death sentence.

The court adjourned hearings to July 8 to allow the victim’s relatives to come from their home country to attend the trial.
