Court allows man to divorce 'haunted' wife

A personal affairs court in Dubai granted a divorce to a newly-wedded woman and her husband after she prevented him from sleeping with her on the grounds that she was gripped by ‘jinn’ (spirits), a newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The court also scrapped a sentence by a previous court ordering the husband to pay divorce dowry of Dh30,000 as well as Dh6,000 monthly rent and Dh2,000 alimony for his wife, the Arabic language daily ‘Emarat Al Youm’ said.

The husband told the personal affairs court that he could not come close to his wife since the first day of their marriage as she was gripped by 'jinn'.

The woman admitted this in court but said she had made it clear to her husband that she was under the spell before their marriage.

“The court decided that the husband was misled by his wife. Refusing to sleep with her husband means the marriage has lost its meaning and goal. The court found that the husband would not have agreed to the marriage had he known that this woman was under the spell of jinn. For this reason, the court allowed the husband to get divorced.”
