Dangerous practice: Who is culprit? Caterpillar driver, worker... or both?

Despite repeated warnings by authorities for construction sites to abide by safety rules, many of them are still flouting the rules and risking workers’ lives.

The pictures below are just one of the many examples for such persistent violations in the absence of awareness and proper supervision.

The photos were taken by Emirates 24|7 at a construction site on Defence Road in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.

A caterpillar was seen clearing a demolished site of earth and rocks and emptying them in a waiting truck.

A worker was seen standing on the truck just under the loaded machine before it emptied its contents.

For one moment, the reporter who captured those shots from the second floor at a nearby building thought the worker would be knocked down by the machine.

When the site engineer was told about such a dangerous situation, he said that both the caterpillar driver and the worker on the truck were “extremely careful".

“Thanks for your concern but don’t worry, they are extremely careful and nothing wrong will happen. You have my word,” he said.

When he was asked if it was necessary for the worker to stand on the truck while the caterpillar emptied earth, rock and metal bars, he said: "No…but sometimes the worker wants to be there to help and ensure the earth is emptied properly.”
