Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) displayed its latest achievements, innovative initiatives and projects during the 18th Water, Energy, Technology, and Environment Exhibition (WETEX) 2016, which was held under the directives of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance and President of DEWA, from 4 to 6 October 2016 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

For three days, DEWA displayed its latest achievements in adopting clean coal, renewable and clean energy systems, and smart grids, as well as interacted with customers to spread awareness on electricity and water conservation, spread the concepts of sustainability in energy and water, environmental protection, green economy, sustainable development, smart cities, and other related sectors.

“The display of services, innovative projects and initiatives at WETEX supports the directives of the wise leadership to consolidate the competitive position of UAE to become one of the best countries in the world by achieving the objectives of the UAE Vision 2021 and Dubai Plan 2021 to make Dubai a smart and sustainable city, as well as achieve the happiness and well-being of our citizens and residents. Our participation is part of our commitment to communicate with stakeholders in international, regional and local energy, environment and water sectors and interact with all community members in Dubai. Being one of the leading exhibitions in the world in energy, water, environment and oil and gas, WETEX tackles the environmental issues and current challenges faced by most countries worldwide. Being the organisers of the show, DEWA has boosted the position of the exhibition.

We are working to facilitate and provide a suitable environment to forge new partnerships and agreements during the exhibition. In addition to this, WETEX displayed the latest developments and innovations by participants, sponsors and exhibitors, which reflected well on the role of Dubai as a leading global hub and demonstrated the mandate of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 to turn Dubai into a green city,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, Founder and Chairman of WETEX.

DEWA’s initiatives and innovative services were displayed during the event on large video screens detailing its journey of sustainability and efforts to preserve environmental resources. DEWA is also displaying its major projects and initiatives in the solar energy field, most importantly  the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the largest single-site solar park in the world with a capacity of  5,000MW by 2030, with investments reaching AED 50 billion. The project is in line with the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030 since it will contribute to developing the technology used in generating power by solar energy, reducing carbon footprint in Dubai, and increasing UAE expertise in the field of solar and renewable energy, and raising awareness of climate change and sustainable energy. It will also facilitate research and development by creating a centre for development and research, which will enhance Dubai’s leading position as a global hub for finance, business and tourism.

“DEWA also highlighted Shams Dubai that encourages home and building owners to install photovoltaic panels to generate electricity and connect to DEWA’s grid. Shams Dubai aims to encourage the use of renewable energy and increase its share in the energy mix. The Shams Dubai initiative is an integral part of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 to transform Dubai into a global hub for clean energy and green economy, and to provide 75% of Dubai’s energy through clean sources by 2050.

Also, Al Namoos, a bespoke service to provide consultants and contractors with electricity connections of up to 150 kilowatts (kW) within 10 days, was thoroughly explained during the show. This service supports DEWA’s strategy of boosting the collaboration with consultants and contractors and updating them on DEWA’s latest initiatives for continuous improvement, and concluding with recommendations to streamline and accelerate the procedure of getting electricity and water services, according to world-class practices, to enhance the levels of excellence in DEWA’s operations.

Additionally, DEWA showcased the Green Charger initiative through which DEWA installs and manages the required infrastructure to supply cars with electric power, to decrease air pollution and preserve the Emirate's environment from the environmental impact of the transport sector.

DEWA also displayed the Hassyan Clean Coal Power Plant, based on the IPP model. With a production capacity of 2,400MW, all its phases will be operational by 2023. The project is key to DEWA’s future plans as it promotes renewable and clean power production.
