'Spin the Belt' gambling game wins jail-time for 3 Abu Dhabi residents

The Abu Dhabi Police have arrested three men accused of gambling and a violent attack.

All three were involved in a gambling game involving Dh100, but a fight ensued and one of the three a mechanic was beaten up by the other two.

The mechanic called the police after he was attacked, but ended up getting arrested himself as investigations revealed he was involved in gambling.

The police later arrested the two attackers as well, one of whom is a carpenter.

What makes the case unique is the game in which the three were betting.

Called ‘Spin the belt’, it involves holding wrapping a belt around a screwdriver and then spinning the belt as fast as possible in an attempt to dislodge the screwdriver.

The person spinning the belt bets Dh100 and if he moves the screwdriver, he doubles his money.

If he fails, he loses his Dh100 staked.

\Colonel Ajeel Ali Juneibi, Director, Police Directorate of the Western Region said: “The victim (mechanic) after receiving the necessary treatment was charged with gambling and he admitted to the crime.”

Col Juneibi added that the game was used by the men to lure unsuspecting workers keen to double their money.
