Sharjah authorities are set to release an Emirati prisoner after an unknown donor from Dubai paid the money to the relatives of the Asian victim knocked over by the prisoner, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Ali Hassan Mayouf, 26, has completed his four-month jail term but remained in prison for failing to pay diya (blood money) to the victim’s relatives in line with Islamic law due to his poor financial conditions, Emirat Alyoum said.

“In response to a campaign launched by Emirat Alyoum to support Ali, a donor from Dubai paid Dh205,000 to end the suffering of Ali,” it said.

Another donor provided Dh30,000 for Ali to support the living standards of his family, the paper added without identify the two donors.

Ali has been ordered by court to pay Dh200,000 in blood money and a Dh5,000 fine for knocking over the Asian just after he set off from his home town of Khorfakkan to Abu Dhabi for a job interview after years of unemployment.

Ali said his father Hassan is the only supporter of the family of 11, adding that he could not pay diya as all his brothers are unemployed.
