An Asian driver stole Dhfive million from his Pakistani employer in Dubai this week and headed for the eastern oasis town of Al Ain to sneak into nearby Oman but was seized just a day after he made away with the money.

The driver, who has been in that job for nearly three years, fled with the five million euros given to him by the Pakistani businessmen to deposit it in the bank on July 2 and went to another emirate where he stayed at a friend.

Dubai police and detectives from the criminal investigation department joined hands to locate the thief and his accomplice after receiving information from the Pakistani trader, who was in hysterical state because of his loss.

Investigation showed the thief later headed for Al Ain. There, he hid in a farm in Alfuq area to plan his escape into Oman, where he intended to hand himself over to authorities as an illegal migrant so they would deport him home.

A police force raided that farm and arrested the thief, who first denied he stole the money. But he later confessed that he had concealed it at his friend’s home.

“We found the money hidden under the bed at his friend’s home in another emirate……all the sum, except for 150 euros, was returned to the businessman, who nearly collapsed when he saw it,” said Lt Colonel Ahmed Humaid Al Marri, director of the criminal investigation department.

“It was a swift operation and the money was recovered and handed back to its owner within 24 hours,” he told the semi official daily Alittihad.
