Several drivers were fined by Dubai Police on Wednesday for jumping over the road divider in Discovery Gardens, which many normally do to drive through the uncongested road in the Gardens community to reach the exit to Jebel Ali or Sheikh Zayed Road.

“A series of cars that jumped over the road divider were caught by the Police and fined,” eye witness told Emirates 24|7.

“It’s always been the case… every morning when I go for my walk I do see a number of cars jumping the road divider,” said MD, a resident of the community.

It almost takes 40 to 45 minutes for residents of Discovery Gardens to reach Sheikh Zayed Road during peak traffic hours, which hardly is a 5 to 10 minute drive at off-peak times.

“I leave for office by 6.30 am just not to get caught in the traffic, the peak rush is between 7 and 9 am. All the lanes are blocked and drivers are so restless that they tend to change their lanes frequently which lead to accidents,” Saish Kumar, who works in a private firm in Abu Dhabi, said.

In May, Maitha bin Adai, CEO of Transport and Road Agency, Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), told Emirates 24|7 that two new entry and exit points were under construction with one from junction 5.5 to Sheikh Zayed Road and another connecting Discovery Gardens to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.

“This solution will come in the form of a few new roads, one of these being the new link to the parallel roads of Sheikh Zayed Road. This new road will improve the accessibility and ease the traffic jam from and to Discovery Gardens,” she said.

The RTA has also said that it will open the road, linking Discovery Gardens with Jumeirah Lakes Towers, Jumeirah Islands and Jumeirah Park, by December.

“The opening of the JLT exit, which was closed since early this year, will ease traffic, but it is more important to connect Discovery Gardens to Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed Road that for certain will solve the daily traffic gridlock we face,” said M Qassim Suhail, a resident of Masakin Al Furjan, a community built opposite Discovery Gardens.

Residents of Masakin Al Furjan as well have to use the same road to exit and entry to Sheikh Zayed Road.
