The drunk driver who accidentally ran over and killed Arab triathlete champion Roy Nasr, will have to raise the blood money (diya) of Dh200,000 by himself.

WJ was sentenced for one-month in prison by the Dubai Traffic Misdemeanour Court. His driving license has been suspended for three months and he has been ordered to pay Dh200,000 in blood money (diya) to Roy’s family.

Insurance firms do not pay diya if the driver was found to be drunk.

The Filipino driver, aged 24, confessed that he was intoxicated when he had crashed into Roy Nasr and his two riding companions near Safa Park on September 6.

The two riders had escaped with minor injuries.

WJ admitted to causing death, injuring two cyclists, drunk driving, illegal consumption of alcohol and damaging property.

During the hearing, he apologised to Roy’s family.

According to legal experts, the judgment is subject to appeal within 15 days.

A number of memorial events have been organised to honour the 49-year-old champ, who had founded the TriDubai group in Dubai.

The Roy Nasr Memorial Super Sprint and Sprint Triathlon will be held at the Jebel Ali Gold Hotel on October 12.

Nasr was working as the COO at Abela & Co. He is survived by wife Tina, daughter Tala and son Elie.
