After the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) announced its ‘My Number, My Identity’ campaign, service provider du has started an SMS campaign to help its customers tackle the registration process.

Large advertisements in Tuesday’s daily newspapers highlighted how du customers could secure their identity after being informed, via SMS, about when they can start the process.

“We will inform you by SMS about when to register. After that, you can visit one of our 250 conveniently located authorised dealers or stores, and we will do the rest,” read the print ad.

The du website further added that only after receiving the SMS notification should the customers visit any of their 250 outlets for registration. It also detailed how the customers will have to produce a “valid Emirates ID or a passport with a valid UAE visa” for completing the process.

“We have taken every measure to make the registration process for SIM cards as simple as possible for our customers, so that they can have hassle-free registration,” du’s Chief Commercial Officer Farid Faraidooni was quoted on their official website

A detailed list of how to go about the registration can be found at the du website. Many customers informed this news website that they had received text SMSes detailing this information, with du requesting them to wait for further instructions on how to go about the process.

The ‘My number, My identity’ campaign was started to tackle misuse of the mobile services by non-owners of the SIM card, with the TRA encouraging users to update their data and take ownership of the SIM they are using.

TRA added that the owners of the SIM cards are legally and financially accountable for its usage, even if it has been handed over to a friend or family member for use.

Etisalat earlier announced the near-completion of procedures to start registration for its customers.

Starting July 17, Etisalat customers can go to over 100 points across the UAE to process the registration.

The SIM card registration is only required once and all unregistered cards will be cancelled once the 18-month time-frame ends.
