Dubai Municipality has intensified its monitoring in the emirate to check the sale of sky-lanterns.

The Public Health & Safety Department of Dubai Municipality views that flying sky lanterns pose a threat to aircraft as well as are a pollutant to the environment.

The civic body has learnt that the hazardous practice is promoted by certain shops which are not approved and also sales are done through some internet sites.

Redha Salman, Director of Public Health & Safety said Dubai Municipality has classified sky lanterns in the category of hazardous toys - like fire-crackers - which are also banned.

The Indian festival of Diwali will be celebrated over the coming days by the large expatriate Indian population in Dubai and the municipality warning on sky lanterns comes in time for revelers considering lighting up the sky.

Salman has urged the public not to encourage or engage in flying sky lanterns nor to buy or sell this kind of dangerous play objects.

He also warned that those who are involved in the banned activities may be booked according to the provisions of Local Order No 11/2003 with regards to the public health and safety and other regulations related to safety.

According to him, the department has started awareness visits and started confiscating products if found.

He said flying sky lanterns may cause fire as they may fall randomly in residential as well as industrial areas.

It poses a big danger to the industrial sector including petroleum companies.
