Dubai healthcare firm to invest Rs21 bn in Kerala

DM Healthcare has announced an investment of over 21.50 billion rupees in the southern Indian state of Kerala.

DM Healthcare is developing healthcare facilities in various locations in the state. Most of these projects are expected to be completed in the next five years.

Dr. Azad Moopen, Chairman, DM Healthcare, said: “Kerala is as high-priority destination for our investment in India in view of the demand for advanced healthcare facilities in the state. We see this as an opportunity to develop Aster Medcity that will not only help meet  medical requirements of the state but also help develop medical tourism to the country from abroad.”

Dr. Azad Moopen is a speaker at the session on healthcare sector in Kerala at the ‘Emerging Kerala 2012’ meet that opens in Kochi on Wednesday.

DM Healthcare group is developing Aster Medcity on 40 acres of land in Kochi. The first phase, which is being developed at a project outlay of Rs 5000 million, includes a 550 bed core hospital with nine centres specialising in areas like cardiology, ortho, oncology etc.. The first phase of Aster Medcity is on track for commissioning during the second half of 2013.

Aster Medcity campus will  have a 500 seat Medical Convention Centre, a four or five- star hotel and serviced apartment complex, staff accommodation for medical and para-medical staff. A high end residential facility of about 1.5 million square feet is also planned with the integrated township having a population of about 10,000 people.

DM Healthcare, which is a major stake holder of MIMS, will drive the expansion of the existing facilities at the Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) in Kozhikode and Kottakkal. An investment of Rs. 3000 million in MIMS over the next three years will see the development of a 150-bed women and children block at MIMS Kozhikode and an addition of 150 beds at MIMS Kottakkal. As part of its expansion, MIMS is also building a 250 bed hospital in Kannur and 200 bed hospital in Palakkad.

Dr. Moopen is also setting up a medical college with a 700-bed hospital in Waynad district. DM Wayanad Medical College and DM WIMS Hospital is set to become a medical campus, providing graduate and post-graduate courses in medicine, dental, nursing, pharmacy, paramedical and associated subjects.

The medical college and hospital will have 1.2 million square feet of built-up area, with a 700 bed teaching hospital. The first phase of the hospital will become functional soon and the medical college aims to take its first batch of students for the MBBS course in August 2013.
