High drama ensued on a key Dubai highway as a motorist on the busy Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road found that her car, which she was driving on cruise control, was stuck in that mode.

The lady, an Emirati, had the presence of mind to call the Dubai Police from the vehicle.

The police then sprang into action in less than four minutes and had three patrols converge around the vehicle, while other patrols blocked off access to other motorists on the road in which the rogue vehicle was headed.

Major General Mohammad Saif Al Zafeen, Director, Dubai Police Traffic, said the 20-year old woman felt that there was something wrong with her car when she couldn’t stop it or reduce its speed.

“Three police patrols moved towards the car which was moving at unspecified speed before Al Warqa bridge,” he said.

“She told police over the phone that she was trying to regain control of the car but she failed,” he said.

Major General Al Zafeen said it took the police patrols four minutes to stop the car and rescue the woman.

The car was finally brought to a halt at Al Muhaisna interchange on the way to Al Warqa.
