A Dubai government report shows 4,930 children were victims of accidents and illness in 2012 and blames negligence by parents for the high rate of injuries at home.

Out of that number, 1,548 children were admitted to hospital in the first 10 months of 2012 suffering from fractures in different parts of their bodies as a result of accidents at home, according to the report by Dubai’s ambulance services establishment.

Two children who suffered from severe injuries died in hospital while the others were treated of serious and medium injuries as well as various illnesses.

“These accident and illness cases at home were a result of negligence by parents…there were also injuries as a result of sport activities at school, home accidents and road mishaps,” the report said.

It showed the total number of children suffering from diseases and accidents in the first 10 months of his year was higher by around 480 over the previous year.

“29 children suffered from serious burns at home in the first 10 months of this year while 183 suffered from asthma, smoke inhalation and other accidents and maladies,” the establishment’s director Khalifa bin Darai told Emirat Alyoum daily.

He said some children suffered from head injuries as they were sitting in the car’s front seat during an accident in violation of traffic laws. “Some of them were found to have put their heads and parts of their bodies out of the car window during an accident.”
