Dubai residents will be able to produce power of their own within a month through solar energy.

Quoting Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa), Arabic daily Emarat Al Youm said Dewa said that it had completed a draft bill which allows Dubai residents to generate power of their own using photovoltaic system.

The law is now in the final stages of approval and expected to be released within a month. Once the law is approved, Dubai residents can use photovoltaic panels on their villas or commercial buildings to generate electricity.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and Chief Executive of Dewa, confirmed that the authority has completed, in cooperation with the Supreme Council for Energy, the draft law to facilitate production of solar power in the emirate with Dewa stations.

He said the project is in its final stages and is expected to be approved within a month from now.

He said the technical work for the implementation of the project has been finished and the authority is ready to link solar energy panels with Dewa power lines.

Al Tayer said residents and companies using solar power to generate electricity must adhere to specifications, standards and safety procedure of photovoltaic panel installations.

“This project is one of its kind in the region and expected to witness a tremendous response from the residents of the emirate,” Dewa chief said.

The solar energy production will allow emirate to diversify its resources.

Al Tayer said Dubai produces 21 megawatts of electricity through solar energy, out of which 13MW is produced from the first phase of Mohammed bin Rashid photovoltaic power plant.

The contribution of solar energy will increase in coming years as tender for the second phase of Mohammed bin Rashid photovoltaic power plant will be released in next October, adding 100 megawatts to emirate’s electricity production.

He said Dewa will install two power transmission stations in Jebel Ali at a cost of Dh70 million as part of preparations for hosting the World Expo 2020.
