Dubai's new airport 7" tablet 'offer' draws mega response

Al Maktoum International passenger terminal at Dubai World Central is set to open for business on October 27, 2013, when launch carriers Nasair and Wizz Air commence operations into Dubai’s second airport.

“To make sure everything is running perfectly, we are looking for volunteers to help us with our final trials,” the Dubai Airports said in adverts running in local dailies today.

However, the volume of interest that the ads generated were so huge that by noon on September 16, 2013, when the ads appeared, the registrations were already closed.

“Applications to take part in DWC passengers trails now closed,” said the notice posted on the website.

“Due to the overwhelming public interest in the upcoming Advanced Passenger Trail at Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central, we are oversubscribed and unfortunately are not able to accept further applications. Thank you for your interest as well as the tremendous support from all our volunteers,” the statement noted.

For UAE residents willing to spend a day at the airport pretending to be passengers and shuttling between terminals and duty free outlets, the firm has requested registration of interest at dubaiairport.com/trials by September 30, 2013.

“Volunteers on the day will receive 7-inch Android tablets as a token of our appreciation,” the ads state.

Construction of Dubai World Central’s passenger terminal building was completed in 2012. Upon opening, the new facility will offer full retail as well as food and beverage amenities. It is serviced by one A380 capable runway, 64 remote aircraft stands and has capacity for up to 7 million passengers per year. The terminal is in the process of undergoing a full testing and trial programme to ensure a seamless opening.

“A new era in Dubai’s already proud aviation story is set to begin,” Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths said earlier this year.

“The introduction of passenger services from Dubai World Central is the first step in the long-term development of the airport and will provide an attractive alternative to travellers. We are equally thrilled to welcome our launch airlines Wizz Air and Nasair. We look forward to announcing additional airlines and services in the months to come,” he noted.
