Dubai Municipality has announced plans to build Desert Rose, a smart sustainable city in the shape of a desert flower after it was approved by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

“The project will be located in between Al Ruwaya and Al Aweer areas across the Emirates Road towards the desert. The urban planning of the project would be in the shape of a desert flower in different colours in sync with the desert environment as a symbol of sustainability,” said Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director-General of Dubai Municipality.

“The city will adopt sustainability standards in terms of economic, social, cultural and environmental aspects depending on the natural resources and renewable energy,” he said.

Poised to become a residential area, the city will include various sustainable housing areas with general services and facilities, and a city centre which will connect to Dubai Metro through an electronic train track, explained Dawood Al Hajiri, Director of the Planning Department at Dubai Municipality.

Further, the city will have an air-conditioned pedestrian path designed in an eco-friendly way with air-conditioning working only during the hot season, and a green belt with environmental and economic benefits, used for agricultural purposes.

As a sustainable city, it will depend on natural resources and renewable energy, Al Hajiri explained. “Service facilities that produce renewable energy and facilities for recycling wastes and sewage water for irrigation and gardening will be taken care of. Network with roads and transportation in sync with the land use and modern communication will be an added attraction.”

A competition has been launched for students at the college and university level to collect their innovative ideas and suggestions in the implementation of the proposed smart city, where the top ten ideas will be awarded prizes and appreciation.
