Five construction workers died after a minibus which was carrying them to work skidded off the road and crashed into an embankment after one of its tyres burst, police said.

All the five workers – aged between 26 and 45 – succumbed to injuries even before reaching the hospital. Four workers died were Bangladeshi nationals and one from India.

There were 11 people in the minibus. Six injured people, two of them in serious condition, were taken to Dibba Hospital for treatment.

The incident took place at around 6.45am on Thursday morning on Dibba-Taween road near Al Taween police station.

Police said the accident occurred when a tyre burst and the van veered off road, hit an embankment and then plunged into a ditch.

Police again warned against overspeed and asked the companies to monitor speeds of drivers in order to avoid catastrophic incident such as happened on Thursday morning.

However, the process of repatriation of the bodies will begin when the embassies and consulates resume work on Sunday.
