In a freak accident, a Sudanese herdsman drowned off Hamriya beach in Sharjah after he was pulled into the sea by his camel.

Police patrols and ambulance rushed to the scene after the operations room was informed of probable drowning case and the presence of a crowd on the beach.

Major Khalid Ali Obaid Al Ali of Sharjah Police said the Sudanese in his twenties worked for a livestock owner and had come to the beach with his camel, his sponsor and two Asians.

Major Al Ali said the camel had drifted quickly into deep waters where the herdsman disappeared while the camel swam ashore.

Coast Guard patrols, police rescue teams and an airplane of the Ministry of Interior’s Air Wing conducted a four-hour search and found the dead man’s body about 200 metres from the beach.

The corpse was taken to Sheikh Khalifa Hospital in Ajman.
