Basil Dirawi was driving happily on the first day of Eid Al Fitr towards Abu Dhabi’s seaside road when he was stopped by a traffic police patrol parked at a junction.

The 22-year-old Syrian man was sure he did not do anything wrong and was about to hand over his driving licence to the cops when he noticed their stretching hand.

Instead of asking him for the driving licence and car registration card, the cops smiled at him and handed him a pack of sweets.

“It was a gift for Eid. They were distributing sweets to the drivers and pedestrians. How nice of them to think of this,” he said.

Hundreds of police men were deployed at key junctions and roads on the first day of Eid Al Fitr on Monday to give chocolate and other sweets to road users.

A police spokesman said the gesture is in line with the police’s social responsibility and “keenness to share the public their Eid joy.”

“We just want to strengthen our relationship with the people and dispel the public impression that policemen are only for imposing fines and catching criminals…we want to be an active part of the community in all fields,” he said.

Abu Dhabi cops were seen at main roads and intersections daily distributing Iftar meals during the fast month of Ramadan, a customary practice they follow every year.
