Sharjah Police busted an Indian gold smuggling racket, by foiling an attempt by two men to take gold bars worth Dh300,000 outside the country via Sharjah International Airport.

They confessed that they were carrying the metal for a gold shop owner in India, who pays them handsome cash upon delivery.

The suspects also told investigating officials that they have successfully smuggled out gold from another airport without being caught on earlier occasions.

The duo had hidden the metals in mobile phone covers to mislead inspection officials, but this time around they were caught.

The gold shop owner in India was sending them money to buy bars of certain specifications, they added.

The suspects said they were smuggling gold bars so as to avoid paying customs duty in India.

They will be referred to Public Prosecution and legal action initiated.

Sharjah Police called on residents not to flout rules or engage in such illegal activities.
