On the second day of the ‘Caltex Road Star’ safety campaign, a team of inspectors were on the roads of Abu Dhabi on Monday, searching for ten drivers who stick to traffic rules.

Returning for its 29th edition, the campaign runs from March 3-7 in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Dubai, promoting safe driving habits among motorists in the UAE by rewarding drivers who adhere to traffic rules.

This year, the campaign took off in Abu Dhabi where a police officer and event organisers patrolled the streets in a Nissan in search of good drivers during peak traffic hours. Drivers who observe basic principles of good driving such as wearing seatbelts, using child safety seats, use indicators and hands-free mobile phones, observe lane discipline and show courtesy in addition to adhering to speed limits were observed by the organisers.

Motorists who observe these basic safe driving rules will be instantly rewarded with a cash prize of Dh1,000, with a total of Dh10,000 given out daily.

Arshad Hameed, a 31-year-old Indian medical representative in Abu Dhabi, was one of the lucky winners on Monday. When a police officer approached him, he was surprised. “I thought I had committed a mistake,” says Arshad. “But I was told that I was the winner of a ‘safe driving campaign’.”

Arshad’s wife and 8-months-old daughter are currently in India. “I will spend the prize on something for my daughter.

“I always try to adhere to the rules because you not only protect your own safety but also that of others. I think it is a very good campaign, and I thank the organisers for doing this.”

After Abu Dhabi, the campaign will move to Sharjah for one day, and thereafter do the rounds on Dubai roads for two days. During the five-day campaign, a total of Dh50,000 will be given out as incentives for drivers to continue with their safe driving habits and encourage other road users to follow the rules.

Ciel Events’ director and founder of the ‘Road Star’ campaign Ms. Roshanara Sait said: “Over the years I have stressed and continue to stress, that with the UAE being home to over 100 nationalities with varying driving habits, it is necessary that we strictly adhere to road rules and regulations in force here.

“The Dh1000 cash reward is more an incentive than anything else. But we have noticed over the years that many winners actually send the money home to their families. This adds a human touch to the campaign,” she said.

The campaign made its debut in 1998 in co-operation with the Emirates Motor Sports Federation (EMSF) and has the support of the police departments of the emirates.
