A total of 14,629 large and small livestock animals were sacrificed in Dubai during the Eid holidays this year, said Ali Al Hammadi, head of abattoirs Department at Dubai Municipality.

The number indicated a 26 per cent increase compared to last year, when 11,000 livestock animals were sacrificed.

The bulk of the animals was sacrificed at the slaughterhouse in Al Qusais, which accounted for 2,306 of the total number.

A further 529 animals were sacrificed in Al Khawaneej, 470 in Lisayli, 342 in Al Quoz and 293 in Hatta.

In the spirit of charity, 7,492 of the sacrificed animals were distributed to the needy, pointed out Al Hammadi.

The increase in the number of sacrifices was possible due to the operation of more slaughterhouses this year, with two temporary establishments in Al Khawaneej and Al Quoz.

The length of the tables was also increased, enabling the rapid proceeding of cutting, skinning and slicing according to the Islamic standards, explained al Hammadi.

The entire procedure would not take longer than 45 minutes per animal, a record time, he added.

The lion share clocked on the second day of Eid, with 92,785 visitors in leisure areas.
