Six houses in Fujairah 'sunk' in the heavy rains that lashed parts of the Northern Emirates over the last few days, reported Emarat Al Youm.

The Civil Defence in Fujairah in co-ordination with the concerned authorities pumped out water from the affected houses and streets.

The main roads leading to the emirate was also cleared and traffic flow resumed gradually.

Minister of Public Works, Dr. Abdullah Belhev Al Naimi, said that the ministry is committed to carrying out periodic maintenance of various projects, including dams, in order to ensure safety of citizens in the Northern Emirates.

The technical team of the ministry is offering complete support and assistance to local authorities to restore the affected buildings and repair infrastructural damages caused by the heavy rains in the emirates.

5 dams and 3 canals

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Works has revealed that contingency plans are afoot to build five dams in the eastern region of Sharjah and in Fujairah to protect residents of these emirates during rainy season.

Also, the ministry is working towards completing two canals by the first quarter of 2016 in Khorfakkan. Another canal is planned in Safed area.
