Dubai’s Police Commander Lt General Dahi Khalfan Tamim was quoted on Tuesday as saying he had three times requested to quit his job and retire but was rebuffed by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

Tamim, who has been police chief since 1980, said he is not clinging to his job and that he would still quit “at the height of his performance.”

“I asked to retire 15 years ago but my request was rejected. No one should think that I am clinging to my job with my teeth,” the 62-year-old general told the Kuwaiti Arabic language newspaper Al Anba in an interview.

“Inshallah, someday I will leave this job with my head up and with clean hands at the height of my performance. Just when I see that my presence affects the performance of Dubai’s police, I have the courage to quit work immediately. I have submitted an official request three times to retire but it was rejected.”

Tamim said he would continue work at present in line with Sheikh Mohammed’s policy that “as long as a man is productive, his presence will benefit the job.”

The police chief said his work is confined to the police job and that he has not ventured into private business although “this business could fetch three times my salary.”

“I did not embark on private business because I respect my job although the law allows us to own companies. I am personally convinced that since I am an employee, I cannot carry 10 melons. One melon is enough for me.”
