Unemployed Europeans mainly from Greece are making a beeline to the UAE, particularly Dubai, in search of greener pastures here, BBC said in a web report.

The financial crisis has resulted in big increase in the number of jobless people in the European Union member states, particularly in Greece which has been pushing for austerity measures to drag itself out of the financial mess.

The Greek population in the UAE grew by 20 per cent last year, BBC report said quoting Greek embassy in the UAE.

“I’ve recently seen an influx of Greeks coming to Dubai whether it’s to look for a job or set up a business or shifting their business from Greece.

The losses keep changing and the taxation has increased and the economic situation is very, very challenging right now (in euro zone).

That’s why Greeks are looking to shift out of Greece.

And Dubai is definitely the preferred choice,” said Alexandros Economides,Vice-chairman of Hellenic Business Council.

He said: “It’s much better (here in UAE) in terms of the business environment, the government provides a lot of support to the new businesses up here. It’s a thriving economy here in Dubai and the UAE for that matter.”

It’s not only the Greeks but a number of Irish and Spanish firms also moving into Middle East, particularly to UAE.
