Men emerged as the main cause of road accidents in Abu Dhabi as they were involved in 962 mishaps in the first six months of 2012. Police data showed women were responsible for 120 accidents in the same period.

A breakdown showed 184 accidents were a result of sudden turns by drivers, with males causing 158 such accidents.

Negligence and failure to concentrate on the road resulted in 152 accidents and again men were the main causers as they were involved in 136 such mishaps.

The report, published in the Arabic language daily Emarat Alyoum showed 120 road crashes were a result of jumping the red lights, adding that 84 of them were caused by male drivers and 36 by women.

Speed was another main factor as it resulted in 100 accidents, of which 97 were caused by men, according to the report.

Accidents involving driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs totalled 44 in the first half of this year and 42 of them were caused by male drivers.

Men were also to blame for most of the accidents involving failure by drivers to respect pedestrian rules as they caused 36 such mishaps against only two accidents involving female drivers.
