Temperatures in the internal regions of the country are forecasted to soar up to 48°C today as summer arrives in the right earnest.

According to today’s weather forecast by the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS), maximum temperatures in the internal areas of the country will range between 44°C and 48°C while minimum temperatures are expected to dip between 25°C and 31°C.

Coastal areas of the UAE will be only slightly cooler, with maximum temperatures forecast to range between 36°C and 47°C and minimum temperatures expected to dip between 26°C and 31°C.

The country’s mountainous regions could see the mercury rising to between 30°C and 36°C, while minimum temperatures there will range between 24°C and 30°C, according to the NCMS forecast.

With temperatures already surging towards the sizzling 50°C mark, there are reports that officials at the Ministry of Labour are considering advancing the mandatory midday break to June 1 this year, instead of the traditional mid-June start.

According to reports, Labour Ministry officials are waiting for medical authorities to analyse the risks of working in the afternoon at these temperatures, and the Ministry will then take a call keeping in mind current temperature trends.

Existing regulations call for a mandatory three-hour midday break in hot weather, starting on June 15. However, this year’s already soaring temperatures in the month of May are prompting officials to revisit that date.
