The Ministry of Economy on Sunday inspected the fruits and vegetables market at Port Zayed area in Abu Dhabi. The visit, led by Dr. Hashim Al Nuaimi, Director of the Ministry’s Consumer Protection Department, was held in cooperation with the Department of Economic Development in Abu Dhabi.

The event marks a significant milestone in the Ministry’s ongoing inspections of markets, cooperatives and outlets which aim to prevent the exploitation of increased demand during Ramadan.

Dr. Al Nuaimi interacted with a number of shoppers and asked them about their views on the prices and availability of key commodities in the market. He encouraged them to communicate with the Ministry’s Consumer Protection Centre on 600522225 in case they have any complaints or proposals for consumer protection or to contact the local Department of Economic Development on 800 555.

Dr. Al Nuaimi announced that the Ministry has directed all shops in the market to use labels approved by the Ministry which show the price, type, and source of the item along with other information for buyers to consider before purchasing an item. He assured that the new process will be implemented within 10 days.

Dr. Al Nuaimi affirmed the stability of vegetable and fruit prices in Abu Dhabi and confirmed that the market has sufficient quantities to meet the emirate’s needs.

He added that prices generally tend to drop as a result of lower demand after the first few days of Ramadan. He emphasized that the Ministry will continue its inspections to prevent any uncontrolled rise in vegetable and fruit prices.

Dr. Al Nuaimi explained that the visits that have been organised by the Ministry of Economy to the country’s various vegetable and fruit markets so far have not revealed any violations. He attributed this to the general commitment from merchants and sellers to abide by the Ministry’s guidance.
