Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, Director General of the Department of Traffic in Dubai, has said motorists who throw cigarette butts out of their vehicles can be fined Dh500.

Al Zafeen has also called for a separate lane for trucks, arguing that though trucks account for 20 per cent of the total number of vehicles, they are involved in 40 per cent of the fatal road accidents.

Al Zafeen said 15,000 buses and 20,000 heavy vehicles had been fined in 2012.

He said the number of deaths in road accidents had declined 8.2 per cent from 134 in 2011 to 123 in the following year.

This came during his dialogue with the public via Twitter and Facebook.

He also said Dubai Traffic Police has fined 44,000 drivers during 2012 for using their mobile phones while driving.

Zafeen called on the RTA to put traffic light signals on all footpaths as lack of optical signals puts pedestrians and drivers at risk.
He also asked the RTA to educate taxi drivers not to stop suddenly to take passengers because this may impede traffic and sometimes cause accidents.

He asked motorists to keep safe distance between vehicles and not to change lanes suddenly. Parents must not allow their children to lean out of the window or sun roof or sit on the front seat, he added
