A tender for the design and construction of a new bridge crossing Dubai Creek in Al Shindagha was announced.

The tender, for the project named Al Shindagha Bridge, invites contractors to bid for the "design and construction of a new 2.7km-long bridge as well as road infrastructure, including a series of interchange crossings".

Details of the bridge are awaited from Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

The 40-year-old Al Shindagha Tunnel currently services traffic in the area.

RTA said earlier this year that: “Plans for the demolition or replacement of the tunnel do not exist at the moment.”

According to RTA, regular inspections were carried out on the tunnel in order to evaluate and conduct preventive and corrective maintenance work in accordance with the monitoring systems in place.

These works were implemented in Al Shindagha Tunnel just as in any other tunnel, it stated.

Over the past years, the tunnel was closed several times for the purpose of maintenance work.

The last round of revamps took place in August 2014.

Constructed in 1975, Al Shindagha Tunnel is the second oldest crossing of the five creek crossings connecting Bur Dubai and Deira.

It comprises two lanes in each direction, has a height clearance of 5 metres and speed limit of 60 km/h.

According to reports, the bridge will include multiple lanes in each direction and form a solution to traffic problems arising in the area.
