The Department of Transport has finalised road plans for Abu Dhabi’s new airport expansion, at the cost of almost Dh638 million.

The project, which is due to be completed in July 2017, will include the construction of a series of major interchanges around the airport to help facilitate traffic flow in and out of the area.

A five-lane intersection heading in both directions will transform access in and out of the airport and another intersection will be built to ease access of vehicles to the airport’s parking grounds. The project will also replace E10 Highway with a tunnel.

More road expansions will be underway from the new intersection near Raha Beach stretching through E10 and E12 to prepare for the high traffic volume expected, especially during rush hours.

The Department of Transport also said that high quality lighting will be installed on the main E10 road.

Khalid Deemas Al Suwaidi, Surface Transport Advisor and Acting General Director of Main Roads, Department of Transport, said the new airport road project is one of the UAE’s major strategic infrastructure projects that aim to ease and cut down journey time for commuters.

When construction is underway, all road works will incorporate road diversions to maintain smooth traffic flow.
