Dealers have vowed not to raise the prices of vegetables and fruits during the fasting month of Ramadan in line with an agreement with the ministry of economy, a newspaper reported on Thursday.

During the meeting at the ministry in Dubai on Wednesday, the dealers also agreed to increase vegetable and fruit imports by up to 40 per cent to ensure enough supplies during Ramadan, which begins in the second half of June, Emirat Alyoum said.

“We agreed with those companies not to raise the prices of their products during Ramadan,” it said, quoting Hashim Al Nuaimi, consumer protection director.

He said the ministry would meet the traders again ahead of Ramadan to discuss stable prices and “initiatives” to ensure sufficient supplies at acceptable prices.

Nuaimi warned that the ministry would not tolerate any price violations by suppliers or marketing outlets, adding that there will random visits to cooperatives, supermarkets and other outlets by its inspectors to ensure compliance.

“Prices of key vegetable and fruit products will remain as they are through Ramadan……we will not tolerate any attempt by shops to raise their prices without prior agreement with the ministry,” he said.
