While Dubai Police recommends children be seated in car seats to ensure their safety, a law pertaining to this has not come into effect, just yet.

This was clarified by Colonel Saif Mohair Al Mazroui, Director of the General Department of Traffic, through an e-mail response to this website’s queries after a local newspaper reported earlier this week that the UAE child car seat law was already in effect.

“There is no law [yet],” Colonel Al Mazroui confirmed when asked “Is there a (new) law on child seats?”

He added, “It is not mandatory but we recommend to fix the child seat for the kids’ safety.”

Colonel Al Mazroui insisted that all children must be restrained by a seatbelt. “Yes, all children must be seated and restrained by seatbelt,” he said.

“Allowing children under 10 years (of age) to sit in the front seat of a vehicle will incur a fine of Dh400 and 4 traffic points,” he added.

This traffic law, he explained was implemented in 2008.

“Dubai Police decision regarding fastening seatbelt is according to the federal traffic law. It has been noted that it is of great importance to use the seat belt as it reduces the number of deaths due to traffic accidents,” he added.
