Even as most oil and gas companies globally have kept their hiring levels subdued due to the relatively low oil prices, big names in the region like Qatar Petroleum and Saudi Aramco are adding to their headcount.

The companies have several vacancies advertised and are looking for people across departments.

Qatar Petroleum has openings in various departments such as gas processing, legal, operations engineering, administration and clerical, gas production maintenance, marine port and terminal operations, drilling, healthcare, human resources among many others. Hundreds of jobs have been posted and interested candidates can apply online.

The compensation package at the company varies by education level, experience, and position in the different companies within the brand, however, it promises to offer competitive salary and benefit packages that is regularly reviewed so to keep it competitive.

Saudi Aramco, too, is looking to fill various roles. Several jobs for expatriates have been advertised on professional networking website LinkedIn such as hydro processing engineer, power generation head, geologist, engineer, mechanical engineer, teacher, gas & NGL facilities planning engineer, research geophysicist, petroleum engineer among several other jobs that need to be filled up.

The remuneration package at the company includes things like a broad-based annual and performance based incentive plan, annual repatriation travel allowance and vacation, severance award, education assistance plan if the employee is hired on family status, housing in company communities or a rental assistance allowance, free medical care and access to recreational facilities, free scheduled transportation, insurance and short-term disability benefit.

Previous research reports on hiring in this sector show that companies in the Middle East are relatively better placed than other regions when it comes to hiring levels.

A Hays oil & gas global job index released in Q1 of this year states that Middle East is performing better than regions like South America, CIs and Europe.

“Businesses such as Saudi Aramco are hiring western expats with specific unconventional experience and for infrastructure projects, which has helped stabilise the Index. The job market is expected to remain relatively strong throughout Q2 and Q3, but it is still too early to tell if the Index will return to 2014 levels,” read the report.

The most in-demand jobs in the region, according to the company are predictive maintenance team leader and equipment engineering team leader with an average salary of Dh33,000 to Dh42,000 ($9,000 - $11,500) per month.

The Index, which charts the number of jobs posted on key oil and gas job portals across the world, dropped from 1.16 to 0.95 in Q1 2015, a fall of 28 per cent from December 2014 and a 42 per cent fall year-on-year, highlighting that the overall scenario may not be that rosy but pockets in the Middle East still remain strong.
