Health inspectors discovered more than seven tones of fish at the Abu Dhabi fish market found to be unfit for human consumption in the first 11 months of 2012, newspapers reported on Wednesday.

The inspectors from the Food Control Authority (FCA) seized the bad fish during regular and surprise inspection visits to the capital’s main fish market just next to Port Zayed.

“Around 7.6 tonnes were found to be unfit for human consumption…all the bad quantities were destroyed by FCA,” Alkhaleej newspaper said.

It said the inspectors fined 70 fish dealers involved in the sale of bad fish and other offences while 212 others were warned.

FCA officials said most of the seized bad fish had been imported from outside the UAE and stressed that any imported shipment must be accompanied with a health certificate.

“We just cannot allow them to import fish from unknown sources or any country where the import of fish has been banned by the UAE,” said Ahmed Abdul Karim, director of the communication and community service section at FCA.
